Warping Bass Tutorial

Warping Bass Tutorial

Jun 24, 2020

Wanna warp the hell out of a bass? I know I do. Here's one way to go about it on Ableton. 1. Add Operator 2. Play in one note for 2 bars 3. Add Saturator and turn up the drive 4. Add Amp, switch it to bass and crank up the gain 5. Add Overdrive and find a sweet spot with some more distortion 6. Add Echo and set the delays to Time and then set them very short. Around 30 ms. Up the input and set the feedback to about 30%. It should be adding an interesting metallic chorus...

How To Make A Reese Bass

How To Make A Reese Bass

Jun 17, 2020

Created originally by Kevin Saunderson under the alias Reese in his 1988 track “Just Want Another Chance” which was sampled by Renegade & Ray Keith in their 1994 track “Terrorist”. It has gone on to basically mean any sustained gnarly bass sound and can be heard in tons of dnb, speed garage and all sorts of other genres. Insert Wavetable 1. In Osc 1 stick with the basic shape and bring it all the way to the top for a full square wave 2. Set the effect mode to Classic and set the PW to 66% 3. Turn on the...

In this video I am going to show you how to create a sidechained reverb rack on Ableton and then how you can go crazy with the reverb tail to create a lazer style rhythm.   1. Add Reverb 2. Create Rack (cmd+G) 3. Show chain list (little yellow toggle on the left side of the rack 4. Duplicate the chain 5. On the second chain delete the reverb and rename that chain “dry”. Call the original chain ‘Wet’ 6. On the reverb that’s left on the Wet chain set it to 100% wet and increase the decay time to...

Using Transitions To Make Your Tracks More Interesting

Using Transitions To Make Your Tracks More Interesting

Jun 3, 2020

One of the main reasons that arrangements seem stale and hard to focus on is because the transitions are often unimaginative. Each idea comes in exactly where you expect, on the first beat of a new phrase.   In this video I go over a few different types of techniques that I use to make my transitions more interesting.

How To Finish A Track Part 1 – Location Markers Arrangement

How To Finish A Track Part 1 – Location Markers Arrangement

May 27, 2020

It's a problem as old as time. You get a sick loop going, everything is feeling vibesy as hell. You're dancing around the studio having the time of your life and feeling like bloody David Guetta crossed with Dr. Dre.  All of a sudden the realisation hits you. You can't accept the Grammy just yet, because you haven't arranged the loop into a full track yet...   You stare at the big grey expanse of the timeline with nothing on it and your heart sinks. How are you meant to fill all that space with your sick loop? Which bits...

Using Audiomovers To Collaborate Remotely

Using Audiomovers To Collaborate Remotely

May 20, 2020

I recently came across a total game changer of a plugin called Audiomovers which you can find here:  https://audiomovers.com/ With this plugin you can not only listen to another person's DAW remotely at full resolution but you can actually record from your DAW to theirs live without latency as well. Once you combine this with some screen sharing and remote control of the cursor via Zoom you can actually have pretty much a full live collaboration going on. Next level!   This is obviously more appropriate than ever during lockdown so I thought I would make a tutorial showing you...

Creating A Custom Slice Preset And How To Warp And Slice Up A Break

Creating A Custom Slice Preset And How To Warp And Slice Up A Break

May 6, 2020

Today I am going to go through the process of warping and slicing up a drum break so you can play all it's sections on a sampler. I will also show you how to create a custom slice preset so that your sample plays just how you want. Creating The Slice Preset 1. Insert a new Drum Rack 2. Insert a Simpler onto one of the empty pads 3. Open Macro controls for that Sampler by clicking on the first black circle with a little dial on it just below the yellow circle that turns that drum rack on and...

Creating A Template To Start Your Tracks

Creating A Template To Start Your Tracks

Apr 29, 2020

This is how I build the template that I start all my tracks with. I guarantee it will make your life a million percent easier and will help you stay in a flow state when you're writing your music. ------------------ - Start by inserting a ‘Drum Rack’ and calling it Kicks - Search through your samples and find a variety of different kick sounds. Drum racks can take .adg files as well so you could add in the 808 kick pre made sampler in Ableton for example. - Add those to your kicks drum rack by dragging the samples onto...

Where Do You Get The Bass Lines? Part 1

Where Do You Get The Bass Lines? Part 1

Apr 22, 2020

The number one question I get asked by producers is without a doubt, "where do you get the bass lines?"  Well in todays video I will take a look at bass lines from three of my tracks.  This is a part 1 and I will continue to look at various bass lines in detail as I make more videos. The tracks that I looked at in this video were: Pompey Cruiser - Holding Hands Control Yourself - Rhythm Section The Bruce - Holding Hands
